Yes. The traditional wooden rowboats at Ouzoud are operated by experienced local boatmen who navigate these waters every day. The crossing is short — approximately 5 minutes each way — and covers the calmer section of the basin away from the direct force of the falls. Life jackets are available on request. The main risk is getting wet from the mist, not from the boat itself. A waterproof case for your phone is strongly recommended.
In our experience, Barbary macaques are encountered on virtually every visit to Ouzoud — they live in the olive groves year-round and are very comfortable approaching people on the canyon trails. That said, they are wild animals and their exact location on any given day cannot be guaranteed. Your local guide knows the trails where the family groups most commonly forage and will actively look for them with you.
Yes — Ouzoud is an excellent family destination. Children love the macaques, the boat ride, and the sound and scale of the falls. The canyon trails are manageable for children aged 5 and above with adult supervision. The uneven rocky paths near the water require care with younger children. The canyon descent involves uneven paths and some steps, which can be challenging for people with significant mobility limitations. The upper rim viewpoints and some of the panoramic restaurant terraces are accessible without descending to the canyon floor. Please describe your specific mobility situation when booking and we will advise on what is realistically manageable and ensure the experience is adapted accordingly.
The Ouzoud Waterfalls are fed by permanent underground springs as well as seasonal river flow — they flow year-round and have never been recorded as dry. The volume varies significantly between seasons (dramatically more powerful in spring) but the falls are always present. Your guide will set appropriate expectations for the volume based on the season of your visit.
Swimming is possible in the quieter pools of the basin away from the direct cascade — local children swim here regularly in summer. However, swimming directly beneath the falls is dangerous due to the force of the water and submerged rocks. Your guide will advise on safe areas. The water is cold year-round due to its mountain spring source.
Ouzoud is a full-day commitment — 2.5 hours each way plus 4–5 hours at the site. It cannot be meaningfully combined with another full destination on the same day.
